ZX-6R Maintenance: Adjust Idle

The bike in these photos is a year 2000 ZX-6R.

Objective

Adjusting the idle speed on your bike is so simple it probably doesn’t qualify as “maintenance” — it’s just a control. But if you are completely non-mechanical (as I was), it might be the first adjustment of any kind that you do to your bike. It’s an easy, low-risk way to start.

Tools Required

None

Difficulties & Warnings

None.

Procedure

The idle adjustment control is on the left side of the bike, just in front of your left knee when you’re riding.
The small black knurled knob shown here. Warm up the engine, choke off. Then adjust this control until the idle speed on the tach is what you want. My manual specifies 1200 RPM.
